HOT NFL NEWS AND RUMORS
July 21:
SAINTS GET SHOCKEY -- The AP reports: Jeremy Shockey caught more passes for more yards as a rookie -- the one season when New Orleans Saints coach Sean Payton was his offensive coordinator in New York -- than any other. The Giants, meanwhile, proved they didn't need their disgruntled star tight end to pull off one of the most stunning playoff runs in NFL history, winning three postseason contests on the road and then beating previously undefeated New England in the Super Bowl -- all while the injured Shockey watched from afar... The Giants will get second- and fifth-round picks in the 2009 draft in exchange for sending Shockey to the team he wanted to play for most. The trade must be approved by the league and is contingent on Shockey passing a physical.
Reports: Bears, Urlacher agrees to deal -- The AP reports: The Chicago Bears and linebacker Brian Urlacher agreed to a contract extension Monday through the 2012 season, according to published reports. The Chicago Tribune and Chicago Sun-Times reported that the extension is worth $18 million, including a $6 million signing bonus. The Bears declined to confirm the deal.
Arizona inks second-round pick Calais Campbell -- The AP reports: The Arizona Cardinals signed second-round pick Calais Campbell on Monday, leaving first-round selection Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie as their only unsigned draft choice heading into training camp. Campbell, a defensive end out of Miami, signed a four-year deal. Terms weren’t disclosed.
Cardinals sign DE Campbell -- Ticker reports: The Arizona Cardinals signed defensive end Calais Campbell to a four-year contract on Monday. Financial terms were not disclosed.
